Design Vision & Concept
“Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air.” The famous quote of Ralph Waldo Emerson, a famed poet and author, is the epitome of a new way of living in which we celebrate in the joyous comfort of our own homes. In other words, living in sunshine brings joy. This simple wisdom serves as the designer’s source of inspiration to create a haven of sunshine and happiness within this exemplary bungalow.

Aesthetic Qualities
Ultimately, the design aesthetic for this residence revolves around natural light. The intention is to create a light-filled home so that the occupants feel refreshed and rejuvenated amid a warm and welcoming environment that leans upon the beauty of Mother Nature. In the living room, sunlight streams in gently through the sliding doors and large windows to generate a calming effect. A combination of solid and subtle materials was pivotal in pulling all the different aesthetic elements together to complement the open space layout. Right next to the living room is a bright and airy dining space that looks out into the garden. A 10-seater wood dining table and accompanying chairs, along with a set of three stylish pendant lamps, anchor the space, visually linking to the living space across the room.

Functionality & Practicality
Besides optimising the interplay of natural light, the designer ensured each space functioned efficiently. The kitchen is a wonderful example of an effective layout that allows an easy flow around the cooking space while keeping the large appliances accessible yet neatly stowed away within the customised floor-to-ceiling cabinetry.

Innovation & Originality
Every bedroom in this home has its own individual design that still cohesively links with the overarching light-and-space design language. The master bedroom, for example, exudes a resort-like atmosphere, thanks to the innovative use of different materials throughout the spacious room. Wood panels envelop the bed area, complemented by an upholstered headboard and stone finishing on the wall for visual interest. Across the bed, the same stone finish on the feature wall further enhances the wood-dominant look. Next to the bed, a sliding door that opens out to the balcony brings in natural light to uplift the entire room.

Environmental Sustainability
The designer utilised multiple large wide glass panels instead of solid walls to bring natural light and outdoor views into the interior. Using heat and UV-reflective glass, these panels were placed in strategic spots, oriented to the sun’s directions at specific times of the day so optimal sunlight could reach the internal spaces without generating too much heat. Blackout curtains for the larger windows also help control the amount of light and heat coming into the home space. These energy-saving approaches translate into less air-conditioning usage and, thus, a more sustainable lifestyle.
