Interior Design Project Info

This project involves the restoration of a UNESCO heritage pre-war shophouse set in the late Strait Eclectic style, dating back to the 1930s. Originally built at the beginning of the 20th century, this historic structure is located in the vibrant heart of Penang's bustling Georgetown city. Over the years, it has served various purposes, including housing a gold jeweller, before undergoing numerous transformations. The conversion of this narrow yet elongated two-story brick building into a dessert bar is a remarkable endeavour that successfully retains and preserves the original features of the structure to the greatest extent possible.

Plaque Noire, which translates to "Black Plate" in French, pays homage to the culinary mastery acquired by the owner through her training at France's renowned Le Cordon Bleu. The dessert bar's design embodies elegance, opulence, and the timeless allure of the colour black. This establishment transcends the traditional dining experience; it offers a carefully curated journey that seamlessly fuses the sophistication of French culinary art with an ambiance that is both sumptuous and welcoming.

"Indulgence in Noir" is envisioned as a sanctuary where culinary art meets design, immersing patrons in an atmosphere that seamlessly combines the classical elegance of Victorian aesthetics with a hint of retro charm. The core design directive revolves around the client's desire for a predominantly black space, where every detail is carefully curated to transform the dessert bar into a luxurious, awe-inspiring haven.

The colour palette is a carefully orchestrated dance of black, forest green, and gold. Black, as the fundamental colour, establishes a canvas of mystery and sophistication. Forest green adds depth and freshness, while gold accents infuse a touch of lavishness. This triadic harmony creates an atmosphere that is simultaneously posh and welcoming, inviting patrons to revel in the indulgence of their senses.

Plaque Noire is designed for functionality without compromise. The careful layout ensures optimal space utilization, curated to balance intimate corners for quiet conversations and larger communal areas for group gatherings. Whether one is seeking a private tête-à-tête or a lively get-together, the seating is tailored to ensure one’s comfort and enjoyment.

The bar serves as a stage for the creation of culinary artistry, meticulously adorned with the artful craftsmanship of wainscoting carpentry. Each panel is lovingly coated in a rich, lustrous black hue. This treatment bestows upon the space an enduring and sophisticated elegance that forms the backbone of its design. The quartz stone bar top is masterfully designed to mimic the luxurious allure of marble, with intricate veining reminiscent of classic marbles. This introduces a layer of refined opulence to the space, seamlessly fusing classical aesthetics with contemporary sensibilities. The combination of these elements showcases the meticulous attention to detail and design expertise that define the bar's interior, ensuring a truly exceptional ambiance. The captivating wallpaper, featuring the mesmerizing designs of "extinct animals" by Moooi's Marcel Wanders & Casper Vissers, serves as a captivating backdrop, sparking curiosity and conversation.

Golden-hued lighting casts a warm glow, creating an ambiance that is both comforting and refined. Plush seating, nostalgic decorations, and a meticulous focus on every aspect come together to create an atmosphere where guests can immerse themselves in a realm of opulence and enjoyment.

Plaque Noire is not merely a destination for desserts and craft beer; it is an immersive journey into the art of indulgence. Step into this world where every plate is a canvas, every corner is a tableau, whispering tales of a bygone era. By breathing new life into the historic shophouse through the restoration of the dessert shop, we not only safeguard its rich heritage but also provide this venerable building with a fresh beginning.

The transformation of this space into a dessert bar infuses the structure with renewed vitality, one that has borne witness to the passage of time and the evolution of an entire city. Plaque Noire represents the harmonious coexistence of history and modernity, where the flavours of the past seamlessly intertwine with the tastes of the present. This endeavour stands as a testament to the timeless allure of cultural preservation and innovation, ensuring that this iconic shophouse will continue to be a wellspring of delight and inspiration for generations to come.
