Interior Design Project Info

Located along Penang’s prestigious Millionaire’s Row, Batu Café & Bar draws inspiration from its unique setting—next to the renowned Lava Mansion. The design concept is rooted in the natural transformation of volcanic rocks, specifically the transition between the two types: Felsic (orange-red) and Mafic (dark grey-black). This geological duality perfectly mirrors the café’s dual purpose—operating as a café by day and transitioning into a bar by night, much like the dynamic evolution of lava rock.

A minimalist design language guides the overall interior, emphasizing the use of locally sourced materials to foster a strong sense of place. The café's landscape features locally sourced limestone rocks, grounding the design in the natural terrain. Custom-designed furniture enhances this narrative, with tables crafted from recycled marble offcuts from a marble quarry in Ipoh and joined with Tego plywood, marrying sustainability with functional aesthetics. Seating includes designer stools, such as the charcoaled black Backenzahn and Clessidra stools, symbolizing the transformation of lava when exposed to intense heat.

The excavation of site to level out for the external decking provided an opportunity for sustainable reuse—the excavated soil was repurposed to form the rammed earth coffee bar. This integration of materials speaks to the project's commitment to sustainability and connection to the land. The inclusion of corten steel for the pivot main entrance door and bar shelving further enhances the tactile, raw material palette, reflecting the natural aging and weathering processes inherent to volcanic landscapes. A rows of private bay window seating, framed by frameless tempered glass, offers uninterrupted panoramic views of the sea and the surrounding landscape, further connecting the café to its stunning seafront location.

Outdoor spaces are designed with the same thoughtful approach. Salvaged hardwood timber beams, from the site original demolished roof structures, are repurposed into seating bench and outdoor communal table, fostering a dialogue between past and present materials. These beams complement the seamless landscape, which blends local limestone rocks into the design, creating a tranquil environment for patrons. The carefully planted and curated landscaping blends seamlessly with the locally sourced Malaysia limestone rocks, creating a tranquil and cohesive outdoor environment that extends the café’s narrative beyond the interior walls.

Batu Café & Bar is more than a functional space; it’s a thoughtfully crafted experience. Its minimalist design, paired with sustainable practices and materiality, provides a timeless setting that evolves with its surroundings. The project’s innovative use of natural and recycled materials, along with its reflection of the volcanic rock transformation, ensures that it leaves a lasting impact on visitors while inspiring the local community. The design promotes well-being through its aesthetic simplicity, connection to nature, and focus on sustainability, offering an elevated sense of place both day and night.
