Embracing the ‘Less is More’ philosophy, we were delighted when this young family came to us with a vision to create a clean, bright, and minimalistic space for their 2,800 sq.ft. home in Twin Palms, Sungai Long. With the homeowner’s main requirement to combine the living room, dining area, dry kitchen, kitchen island, and even an altar, altogether in one place, we designed an open layout concept to streamline the different areas and blend them harmoniously into one multifunctional space, yet achieved a modern, sleek, and visually spacious home.
The key to minimalistic design is to simplify the colour scheme of the room. Our rule of thumb is not to have more than 3 different colours in the overall palette of the space, hence we selected white oak as the main palette to complement the neutral earthy hue of the home. The grey ceiling wraps around the living room, dining area, and extends to the dry kitchen, cocoons the entire area in a subtle and cozy way. The exact shade of grey flooring also reflects the ceiling colour and design, creating a harmonious and cohesive look of the entire zone.
Apart from the living hall, the kitchen island has its exquisite detailing too. To match with the white oak palette, we used natural travertine stone which gives unique swirls and gradients that blend in the space beautifully. To take a closer look, it is noticeable that the kitchen island is topped with polished travertine stone, while the bottom is wrapped with grooved travertine, which adds different textures and design elements to the kitchen island.
Being the most captivating highlight of this home, the idea of the daybed came from an existing protruding window at the living hall. With that, we created a full-length TV cabinet wall and elongated it to the window as a daybed, making it a cozy spot as a reading nook. Similarly, the thoughtful composition of dry kitchen with altar cabinet also stands out to be a unique feature of the space. Meanwhile, since the living area has a bright and welcoming vibe, we adopted a contrast in the design for the master bedroom, by using a dark colour scheme to create a soothing ambiance to unwind and relax, turning it into a perfect set-up for a good night’s rest.
All in all, the essence of minimalism is a discovery of what truly matters in our space and by extension, our lives with this pristine home embodies the epitome of serenity, simplicity, and style.
