In the restoration project of a Chinese shophouse in George Town, Penang, “You Le Yuen” was designed to a boutique beds and breakfast place with duplex arrangement, the home and working area for the owner as well as part of his collection of vintage furniture, objects and arts which he had sourced through out the region.
The name of the guesthouse ‘ You Le Yuan ’ reveals Leong’s considered approach to the project. The Chinese name is a homophonic play. The character 柚 come from 柚树 which means teak – a nod to the material that was used extensively in the restoration. 柚乐园 as a phrase sounds like paradise, or amusement park. Truly, ‘ You Le Yuan ’ was paradise and playground for the owner, designer and guests.
