Interior Design Project Info

Modern aesthetics integrated with Wabi-Sabi is not just a design style, but also a pursuit of the philosophy of simplification and returning to one's roots. In terms of color selection, Wabi-Sabi is adept at using earth tones, beige, and gray to convey unembellished authenticity. This simplicity is, in fact, the best interpretation of the perfection in imperfection.

The client's house is located in Penang, designed as a cozy retreat for family members on vacation. Here, amidst the hustle and bustle of work and daily life, what he desired was a momentary respite, with each space exuding a relaxed and comfortable ambiance. The client had clear requirements: a preference for muted colors and light wood tones, blended with soft, curved design elements.

Upon entering the house, the first thing that catches the eye is the ingeniously designed shoe cabinet at the entrance. The hanging cabinet cleverly hides the electrical box, and below it, the floating cushioned bench exemplifies the casual nature of a vacation home, without the need for excessive storage. Continuing into the living room and the dry kitchen, lighting is a major highlight of the design. Suspended from the living room ceiling are three irregular semi-spherical pendant lights, accompanied by linear wall lights, creating a soft and cozy luminous environment. Such lighting is not only functional but adds to the design, enhancing the spatial layering. As for storage and display needs, a minimalist floor-standing bookshelf was chosen. Its curved design not only stores books and trinkets but also showcases home artworks or mementos. The backdrop of the TV features linear lighting grooves, seamlessly integrating the television with other devices in a way that's both aesthetic and practical. Green plants, as embellishments, add vitality to the space and bring a hint of nature to the residents.

The dry kitchen is where breakfast is enjoyed. The cabinets house a refrigerator and an oven, and the island design adds fluidity to the space. Multiple lighting techniques were used, with wall-embedded linear lights and simple pendant lights producing a gentle and even illumination. This design not only ensures adequate brightness but also makes the space appear larger and brighter. The open-concept kitchen and dining area are seamlessly integrated, with the island countertop featuring luxurious marble, enhancing both functionality and luxury. The classic white cabinets provide ample storage space. To emphasize spatial continuity, an open curved display shelf meets both display and storage needs, harmonizing with the flow of the space. The color palette, centered around light gray, white, and the warmth of wood, creates a comfortable atmosphere. Bold black elements, like the kitchen faucet and living room furniture, inject a modern minimalist vibe.

The client emphasized the need for storage in the master bedroom. Upon opening the door, one is greeted by a large mirror and a half-height cabinet. To the left is an L-shaped wardrobe with a black-framed gray glass door. The large mirrored wardrobe not only makes the room appear more expansive but also adds a touch of elegance. The in-built elongated light strip adds a gentle illumination, complementing the ceiling spotlights, creating a sophisticated ambiance. To the right is the bed, overlooking a balcony with a breathtaking blue sea view – the essence of a vacation feel.

For the children's bedroom, the client's requirement was for a double bed, a single bed, and a wardrobe. The designer cleverly integrated these three elements, designing a bunk structure to maximize space. The bed frame, in pure white, imparts a sense of simplicity and modernity. Details of the bed design were given special attention for aesthetics and safety. The integrated wardrobe with the bed not only saves space but also harmonizes the overall layout. The upper bunk is for a single sleeper while the lower one is a double. Notably, the upper bunk's black glass design allows the child above to see inside the room or gaze towards the foot of the bed, enjoying the serene sea view. This children's bedroom design prioritizes both functionality and aesthetics, blending practicality and beauty seamlessly.

This vacation home melds Wabi-Sabi aesthetics with modern design elements, offering the client a space that embodies both the warmth of home and the relaxation of a getaway, achieving a perfect blend of life and art.
