Interior Design Project Info
The project is Quay West Residence, where located along the Queens Bay area in Penang. There will be three family members living in this 1470 sqft. home, two adults and one elder. The client seeks a bright, clean, and minimalist interior with neutral colours. Due to the limited spaces in the common area, the concept of an open layout was proposed, to bring in additional natural light to achieve a spacious, comfy but eye-catching ambiance.
The neutral colours like beige and shades of white are widely used to create airy and elegant spaces. To create a clean look, a slightly black element and lining in the design also bring the design out as a focal point. The stunning wood texture in a neutral tone is another design element as well. Curvature on furniture is not just friendly used but outstanding.
Among every area in this home, the TV partition wall is the fascinating highlight. The half-height of TV partition wall is located right after the entrance, as a divider between the foyer and living area. The TV partition was designed in the form of an L-shape connected with the tall display cabinet, with curves at the corner of the cabinet and hanging shelves. It's half height to allow more natural light comes through and also visually make the area more spacious.
Designers apply the principle design of contrast on almost every piece of furniture in order to bring out the contrast, such as the black in the open cabinet at the entrance, the black on the TV partition wall, and so on. Other than that principle design of repetition is applied too, for example on the bedhead and cabinet doors. Repeated vertical lines create a certain consistency in a space, which gives a rhythm vibe.
In addition, the furniture is made using sustainable plywood and low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) adhesive glue which is not harmful to humans and the environment. The paint is a low VOC paint as well. Besides that, the electronic product with the energy star label was chosen as it helps individuals save long-term money and most importantly protects the climate. In conclusion, It is encouraged for designers to use good efficiency materials if possible as it reduces impacts on human health and the environment.
