Interior Design Project Info

The Painter’s Studio as its name suggests, evokes the bold brushstrokes of a masterpiece. Splashes of colour, as well as contemporary and mid-century modern elements infuse the space with an electrifying energy without adhering to any particular interior design style. Combining the clean lines, rounded forms and natural materials characteristic of the mid-century modern aesthetic with the bold use of colour, unique abstract shapes and industrial chic elements of contemporary interior design, we brought to life the homeowner’s artistic vision and offered a fresh take on modern living and working spaces. Without leaning too heavily into either style, we instead chose to pursue the unbeaten path in creating an artistic wonderland that drew inspiration from both contemporary and classical art.

The Painter’s Studio is not merely visually pleasing—it transforms your everyday items like staircases and seating into playful yet functional pieces that delight the eye. Making the most of the real estate, a floating staircase in striking cobalt blue and white creates a pathway to a mezzanine floor, leading the way with playful industrial chic curved stainless steel railings. The red spheres on the vertical supports add a playful industrial chic touch and are reminiscent of matchsticks. The design of the floating staircase’s cantilevered steps create an illusion that they are suspended in mid-air, adding a sense of lightness to the space.

Rather than leaving the stairs undecorated, a whimsical rabbit sculpture suggestive of Jeff Koons famous stainless steel rabbit sculpture sits on one of the steps, melding both contemporary minimalism and playfulness. Its minimalist metallic shine emphasises the contemporary side of the space without taking away the fun element. The timeless appeal of natural wood flooring was also elevated by pairing it with futuristic materials like stainless steel, showing that you can still embrace modernity without sacrificing classic elements. The colour scheme, with its bold use of cobalt blue, muted lime yellow and burnt orange, pays homage to the abstract style of Piet Mondrian. Meanwhile an oversized paper lantern light fixture hanging from overhead adds a touch of warmth and texture to the room.

But before we advance to the topmost floor, the kitchenette catches the eye with its backsplash of white tile and black grout—a classic combo—over creamy countertops and dark walnut cabinetry with geometric cutouts. With the idea of creating a more inclusive and convenient living space, we decided to break away from design norms by lowering the wall cabinets and reducing their depth slightly by slanting the bottom inwards. This helps to prevent the inconvenience of bumping your head against it when moving around the area and also allows occupants of all heights to comfortably utilise the storage options. The cabinet design also departs from the typical 20mm finger groove common in recessed handle cabinets. Instead, we opted to design them with a rounded porthole extrusion detail, offering both functionality and a sleek submarine aesthetic that mirrors the mezzanine windows.

While not the main feature of the kitchenette area, the white tile and black grout backsplash are supporting characters that go on to become the main star of the alcove. The tiles wind their way around the back of the kitchenette and dining area, extending seamlessly into the base of the staircase that also doubles as a built-in seat. This same feature reappears again in the mezzanine space as a tiled seating area, adding a dash of visual contrast to the plain walls. For a unique touch that puts the “fun” in functional, a muted lime yellow abstract seat overlaps part of the base of the staircase as well, giving the illusion of movement or even puzzle pieces fitting together. While seemingly playful in design, the intersection of the cabinetry, bench and stairs still maintains ergonomic standards, ensuring user comfort.

Once you step into the mezzanine area, you’ll be instantly transported to a cosy and eclectic haven featuring a playful mix of shapes, lines and textures. The tiled seating, arranged in parallel lines, creates a unique and visually interesting feature. The shelving also reflects our commitment to ensuring that every space we create is future-proofed, with expanding shelves that function as both a storage area and display rack. Rather than staying confined to the rigidity of built-in cabinets, the expanding stainless steel shelf frame is more fluid and has the potential to expand with the client’s collection over time.
