First of its kind in Johor Bahru, this showroom cum restaurant showcases “Forms follow Function” at its finest. Authentic Japanese Tatami “Migusa Sekisui Tatami” produces tatami mats that are steeped in tradition yet at the same time designed to blend into the modern living environment. Adhering to Japanese client’s brief of a functional yet aesthetic space, our intension is simple but strong.

Once entering the showroom, one is greeted by a cosy non-treated original plywood finish wall to ceiling reception area. Guest is introduced and taught about the advantages of this tatami mat on the green wall. Then the area is divided into 2 main functions, the showcase of as many tatami mats in actual sizes as well as small scaled mat samples for ease of colour matching and combination on the left, and the actual implementation of these mats in real life on the right. The implementation is also divided into three major types, the normal seating type where the tatami mat is custom built-in into the wooden bench, the platform or washitsu seating as well as a kids play area with tatami mat to emphasize the mat’s safety and health essentials.

Implementation of the mat is further extended to the first floor Japanese restaurant called “Shiokara”. Client’s brief of a very cosy and private Japanese fine dining is implemented here in various dining options i.e. bar dining, normal dining, platform dining, washitsu dining with custom made tatami benches, and washitsu dining with tatami platform.

Playing an important role in unifying all the spaces and elements in this showroom and fine dining is the use of raw plywood, where the original woodgrain of plywood is exposed in a natural and interesting way, which can come in a surprise.
