Interior Design & Architectural Project Info

Derived from the concept of “Shan - Mountain” and “Shui - Water”, and a twist of contemporary, this house transformed from a well-designed classic-colonial house into a Chinese contemporary house with classic-colonial elements, untouched, but re-interpreted, in order to accommodate increased family size and future needs. Elements of “Mountain” and “Water” can be noticed at common areas around the house, be it feature walls, floors, chandeliers, and even decorations.

Designing and renovating of a house doesn’t mean to demolish everything, it can be simply be upgrading the existing, making use of the good qualities of the existing building (be it interior or exterior), refurbish what is needed, minimizing the destruction of existing structure, but in turn making use of all these shortcomings such as low beam height, unaligned columns and beams, dark corners of the buildings etc into a problem-solving tools but with an aesthetic touch. It is all these limitations and challenges, and grueling discussions between Client-Consultant-Contractor that turned this house into a house of its own, filled with character, be it “new” or “memorable”.

Bring down the “Ego” of a designer, every client and contractor has something that they are more knowledgeable and more exposed than we are, this is the case of this project, where we don’t just share our design knowledge, but keep on learning new things, exposed to new things that others have, and by combining and comparing, the outcome can be satisfactory.

The overall colonial-look building façade has not be altered much, but with careful thoughts, respecting the existing context, playing with colours and shapes, a new façade is being developed with a rather refreshing new look.
Good old nicely crafted staircase has been maintained, together with the intricate wrought iron balustrades, blends well with the surrounding new elements.

Existing low beams and ceilings has given the opportunity to create interesting ceiling design, which can be seen at master bedroom entrance foyer, dining, dry kitchen, and especially wet kitchen.

Landscape has always been a priority in our design, moreover with the client’s preference of a well-articulated landscape, and with close collaboration with landscape contractor (thanks for Nature Landscape), an experimental green wall with exposed red bricks planted with orchids and other plants, creates a well-deserved view from the dining and dry kitchen. The green wall connects to the fish pond via stepping stones, and meander around a round column, and starts and ends at a water feature. At top floor where the study hall is, one can also enjoy a roof garden at the extended balcony.
