Dr Kody Kato is an award-winning architect rewriting the rules of design. His journey, rooted in the lush landscapes of Maui, Hawaii, and influenced profoundly by his Japanese lineage, has propelled him to international acclaim, blending his innate curiosity with a profound sense of social responsibility.

Kato’s inspiration emanates from his childhood explorations in Hawaii, a place he describes as a vibrant paradise, but his journey to architecture was serendipitous. He initially studied medicine but realised that it was not his passion. After a consultation with a career counsellor, he decided to apply to architecture school, despite having no prior experience, got accepted. That turning point led to yet another solidifying moment in his life.

At 19, Kato approached the Dean of Architecture with a bold proposal: he wanted to create a new program called creative engineering. He argued that the planet’s future depended on architects who could design sustainable and innovative structures. The dean was impressed by Kato’s passion and vision, and he agreed to create the new program. Kato thrived in the creative engineering program. He won the national award for design within a year of starting, and he quickly found his footing in the field of architecture.

His academic pursuits delved into structural engineering, material science and nature, allowing him to forge a unique path in architecture. He honed his skills under the mentorship of architectural luminaries like Dr Ken Yeang in Kuala Lumpur and Byoung Soo Cho in Seoul, shaping his integrated research approach.

Through his creative engineering approach, Dr. Kody Kato seeks to improve the quality of life for millions, fostering a deep connection between people and their surroundings. In 2017, he set up the Office for Design Evolution (ODE) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as a testament to his commitment to these values. The firm has since been committed to creating designs that are both beautiful and functional while also being respectful of the environment. Their work isn’t just to create spaces; they craft experiences, seamlessly blending innovative engineering with a profound respect for nature.

Kato’s work at ODE is a testament to his commitment to performance-oriented design. The firm’s projects are designed to respond to the specific needs of their clients and communities, as well as the environmental conditions of the site. For example, ODE’s Beyond Surface project, one of Kato’s most notable projects, was a gravity-defying paper structure exhibited at the London Craft Week in 2018. Beyond Surface is made entirely of paper and is held together by a series of innovative joints that allow it to float in mid-air. The structure is inspired by how leaves and flowers fold and unfold using wooden joinery and the Japanese concept of origami.

Dr. Kody Kato believes that architecture and design are research-based and performance-oriented. He is committed to designing buildings and structures that are responsive to the needs of their clients and communities, as well as the site’s environmental conditions. His work is an inspiration to others in the field and is continuing to help shape the future of architecture and design.
