At its fundamental, a house offers respite. For this house in Seremban, Malaysia, designed for a young couple, Pins Studio attempts to create more than a place of rest, but a practical home with surprises.

The youthful spirit of the owners is most manifested in the living room, where it is made distinctive by a darker material palette and a sweeping crescent on the ceiling. The crescent has practical and spatial functions, serving as the main illumination source and the defining boundary between the living space and the back-of-house. It denotes a transition from the outside to the inside, and from brightness to darkness; a design solution that is seemingly simple but clever.

The dining space sits within an extended indoor patio. It is lit from all sides by daylight to create an ephemeral atmosphere. The extension frees up the plan of the house from typicality and gives it space to breathe. Through a sliding door, the kitchen breaks away from the contemporariness of the living zone and transitions into a minimalist haven. It is then flanked by a new rear extension which houses the laundry and a solarium. The main bedroom speaks of a different language. It is muted and reserved, a perfect place to wind down. Attention was given to delicate details such as lighting, upholstery, cabinetry, handles, et cetera. The expansive wardrobe and master bathroom complete the bedroom as a pragmatic couple’s suite.

One would find harmony across materials throughout the house. The living zone is dominated by black and dark oak timber tones, mediated by in-between gray tones, and white surfaces used modestly as accents. In other areas, light oaks and brushed steel finishes are used intermittently for a change of mood. The result is a quintessential abode, more so one with character and substance.
