Located within the vibrant creative community of GMBB Mall, Zontiga is a creative hub that invites photography enthusiasts to immerse themselves in the tangible beauty of film. More than just a shop, Zontiga offers a unique blend of a photography film lab, a photobook store, a library and a gallery.

With its minimalist material approach and strategic lighting, Zontiga creates a distinctive and inspiring atmosphere that sets it apart from other retail spaces. This creative sanctuary offers a space where photography enthusiasts can explore, learn and connect with like-minded individuals.

The storefront begins with a recessed glass doorway and a striking cobalt blue film vending machine set against a backdrop of turmeric orange walls, creating an eye-catching entrance. Step inside and you'll be greeted by Zontiga's minimalist interior design, characterised by the use of stainless steel, red travertine and mirrors, resulting in a sleek and modern aesthetic that's immediately apparent. The interplay of light and shadow, inspired by the photographic process, is a central theme of the space, adding depth and drama to the overall design.

Every artist carries within them a balance of light and dark. Light illuminates the path to inspiration and truth, while shadow unveils potential. In Zontiga, this concept is realised through the interplay of light and shadow. Strategically angled lights cast shadows that shift across the walls, while spotlights highlight or hide depending on their placement. Mirrors, stainless steel shelving and reflective surfaces gleam in response to the dance of light and dark. Depending on the lighting, the space transforms from a brightly lit gallery to a sepia-toned sanctuary reminiscent of old photographs, evoking a sense of nostalgia. The black and white photographs on the walls and the artfully placed cameras pay homage to the history and artistry of photography, creating a timeless atmosphere.

The metal "film" art installation adds a dynamic element to the space, serving as a unique backdrop. A rich chestnut brown ottoman serves as a seating spot for shop patrons to browse while also being the focal point for the narrow space thanks to its vibrant hue. Positioned on the diagonal section of the ottoman, a mirror reflects the ceiling and the hanging installation, creating a mesmerising play of light and shadow. To maintain a pared-down appeal and emphasise the clean aesthetic, we opted to retain the original cement flooring instead of carpeting the interior. This choice helped to create a minimalist and uncluttered space that perfectly complements Zontiga's overall design. Adorned with a small lamp, camera and watches, the mirror and red travertine counter at the far end of the shop add a touch of warmth and human connection to the space while simultaneously providing a stylish yet discreet spot for transactions. The counter’s mirrored finish helps to elegantly camouflage it, optically expanding the area and making the space appear larger than it actually is.

Overall, Zontiga's design is a visual representation of the photographic process, from the technical aspects to the artistic expression. The interplay of light, shadow and materials creates a space that is both inspiring and immersive, inviting visitors to explore the world of photography and discover their own creative potential. This combination of elements brings the space to life, reflecting the dual nature of creativity and the endless possibilities that photography offers.
