Interior Design & Architectural Project Info

Designer : Beh Weng Teik Albert Lau
The total revamp of a 30 years old house from double storey to three storey terrace house on end lot land. The task is to demolish the entire house and rebuilt to accommodate a new floor to cater the larger family demand. The story behind the design begins with the intimate and meaningful communication with the client – an enthusiast for architecture and also the designer for the house, to reshape and redefine the architectural design to give a rebirth of over 30 years old untouched house to become an introvert house infilled with various green
element and sustainable features. The owner specially requested the design approach to optimize the comfort level and prioritise practical and functional. and more importantly, their hopes and aspirations. The house was designed with open plan concept and portrays a low profile of modern tropical architectural style, where luxury look will be unseen from the design, but functional and sustainability is the foremost of the design task.

The Sculpture Courtyard, strategically placed at the heart of the house, break the enclose space and dictate the liveliness of the house where all the rooms and spaces are interconnected via this vertical volumatic atrium with a big tree and low shrubs, showered with the filtered natural sunlight via a glass skylight at top and allowing more natural daylight to penetrate deep into the house while the indoor plants freshening the indoor air. Once
entering the house, you will be greeted by the triple volume landscaped courtyard with apiece of sculpture statue sitting under a shaded tree, mimic “buddha meditate under the tree”and it’s welcoming the visitor facing the entrance foyer.

The landscape central courtyard also intended to create a brighter and airy atmosphere, as well as to induce stack ventilation with the thoughtful placement of air vent at the topmost level of the courtyard where hot air will always disperse and release upward through this opening and thus keep the interior cool constantly. Hence, one will feel breeze and does not need to turn on the air condition with the carefully planned of cross and stack ventilation
design approach. On the upper floor rooms, blank walls have been replaced with windows and vent block to create better cross ventilation and promote interaction between upper floor and lower floor through this open volume landscape courtyard where the residents interact with each other amongst the nature setting.

Surgical intervention in terms of the overall layout resulting a more open dry kitchen and wet kitchen, connecting dining and living in one single living space, where the residents would have better social space and better bonding time with the family. On top of that, all the new bedrooms have been reorganized to ensure every single room would have an en-suite bathroom and some with view towards the courtyard below.

The implementation of the series of planter boxes are strategically placed to further emphasize the naturalistic motif established within the property. It also helps to create better privacy and act as natural cooling agent throughout the house.

A holistic approach was employed in order to achieve intrinsic integration between architecture, interior design, and landscaping. Further accentuating the overall design is a meticulously curated earthy material palette - reflected in the pebble stone, timber strip ceiling, cement vent block, brushed metal and rods, and lush greenery, which bestow The Sculptured Courtyard House undeniable aesthetic quality. Meanwhile on the exterior of the
house is something simple with clean louvre and white plastered wall. Nothing fancy as no excessive luxury element but rather, concentrate on quality of light, ventilation, space, and greenery.

The existing concrete staircase was demolished and replaced with a new steel feature stair with hardwood floor plank built in its place to connect all stories with views of the landscape courtyard. The staircase was purposefully designed with open risers and steel pre-tensioned cables to create a ‘floating’ effect as light filters down it

The adapt of triple layer façade, the combination of vent block / louvre screen, green planter boxes and glass panel are used to allow more daylight and view into the house without compromise on the heat, glare and privacy.

To achieve better thermal comfort, AAC lightweight block (made of slurry mix of cement, sand,
lime and aerating agent) is being selected to replace conventional clay brick to deliver a lightweight solution to save cost for structure and foundation. On top of that, it contains superior heat insulation properties than clay brick, thus it requires less energy to for cooling the interior air due to exceptional sustainability.
