Interior Design Project Info

Project Type: Shop Lot
Design Concept: Japanese-style Izakaya
Location: Jalan Kampung Pantai_Melaka
Size: 1580 sqft.
Designer Team: Vincent Ng & Wilson Hau

THE OLD MERCHANT is a new Japanese-style Izakaya (居酒屋) concept bar is located in Malacca.
The Interior space we created functional interiors with visually natural surroundings and natural elements of the bar. A color palette for a space is another way to mimic nature. The colors show variations in brown, which symbolizes trees, and gradients of white and gray, which symbolize rocks and stones. The elements of the space ceiling design are cherry blossoms (Sakura) and oil paper umbrellas.
For the front façade, we designed the Telephone booth as the main entrance and also Check-In Spot. The unique bar area design, hanging wine display rack and red lanterns enhance the attraction to guests. There are three different types of Dining Areas. First, the design of the wooden fence on the wall was inspired by The Shinkyo Bridge. (神橋) The red neon signage logo shows new highlights of the area. Second, we designed the wall panel as the facade of a traditional Japanese old house and third, the folding door area establishes a connection with the Malacca River view and integrating nature into it.

We created two types of VIP areas, in the first space provided Taruzake display rack is made of natural pine wood with rough finish and three red rotatable dividers made of pine wood and rattan net. After that, we designed a modern tatami room using timber and specified a huge light box on the ceiling design, which combined with the aesthetic appeal of wood joints on the dividers, bring warmth, ambience and style to the space.

Using modern installation techniques and the concept of interaction with customers, we transform traditional Japanese themes into unique decorative artworks.
