Interior Design Project Info

The Macalister Mansion hotel is a revived heritage mansion located along Jalan Macalister in Penang. It is also the first hotel in Malaysia to become a member of the prestigious Design Hotels brand. The hotel is one of the most coveted luxury hotels for experiencing the Penang colonial lifestyle with the conveniences of modern living and we are honoured to be part of design and renovation team involved in the facelift of the hotel.

The hotel comprises a Reception area, Multi-purpose Room, eight distinctive hotel rooms, restaurants and bars within established grounds that include a modest mosaic-tiled swimming pool. After much consideration, we converted part of the existing Reception area into a Lobby. This area is filled with Old English vibes, derived from a sympathetic union between modern and classic with a tinge of comfortable homey ambiance. Meticulous research on Wainscot design and construction is evident with classical antique joinery profiles and materials such as whitewashed ash wood panelling along the walls. A key highlight of this space is the reflective mirror ceiling, which heightens the space visually and adds grandiosity to the Lobby.

Moving on to the Reception area, one will be greeted with a red marble architrave with antique-inspired brass ion-plated signage. Respecting the original layout of the space, the curtains and cabinets are designed in a curvature form. At the centre, the Reception table, made of wicker and walnut frame, features a custom-designed table top that uses a combination of marble from its eight rooms, to create an abstract representation of the floor plan of the rooms. A grand feature display behind the table houses the keys to the hotel rooms. Each of the antique keys has a coloured tassel key tag similar to the rooms’ respective marble. The room also features a hexagon-shaped ceiling that adds a sense of grandeur to the overall space. At its newly-added Multi-purpose Room, equipped with state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment and movable furniture, up to 45 guests can be accommodated for various private and corporate events.

Every corner of the hotel is a reflection of luxury, and the grand staircase and its first floor landing are no exception. Modern classic display shelves with Arabescato Carrara marble wainscoting and off-white wall panels adorn the scene to create a comfortable ambiance for a quiet reading corner for its guests. The corridor is installed with Arabescato Carrara arch frames, strategically placed to allow for natural sunlight. Special attention to detail is evident in the ironmongeries such as door knobs, door knockers, locksets and inlay between the marble and carpet – handcrafted authentic brass in vintage style. Conceptualised on Quality over Quantity, the eight rooms’ walls were installed with new wall panels and 8 different marble slabs that were selected according to the suitability and spatial needs of the hotel guests: Rosso Albania, Fior De Pesco, Arabescato Orobico, Ice Emerald, Verde Alpi, Calacatta Lincoln, Spider Red and Grey Emperador. Each slab is meticulously curated to ensure the consistency of the veins envisioned for this project. To complement the individuality of each room style, matching pillow cases, keys, beverage trays and other accessories are handpicked to harmonise with the marble veins and colour scheme of the already commissioned art and furniture pieces.
