Why you should care

From flooring to organisation, here’s everything you need to know about creating a pet-friendly home.

As more Malaysian families make their furry friends an integral part of their household, creating a home that accommodates them has become more important than ever.

However, balancing great design and wanting our pets to live their best lives can sometimes be tricky. Luckily, there are many ways to make your home pet-friendly while blending in with your home’s aesthetic. From flooring to organisation, here are 8 tips to consider when designing your space.

1. Opt for durable flooring

When it comes to flooring, look for materials that are durable, scratch-resistant and easy to clean like laminates, luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) or ceramic tiles. If you have older pets, opt for slip-resistant flooring such as bamboo or cork as they are less problematic to their joints.

2. Easy-to-clean walls

Pets can be rough on walls, especially if they love to rub against them or tend to make messes. Try to avoid highly textured walls or matte and flat-finished paints to inhibit fur from clinging to them. Instead, consider a satin or a semi-gloss finish to repel pet hairs or scrubbable and washable paint for easy cleaning.

3. Choose the right textiles

Choose fabrics that are durable enough to withstand claws and the occasional rough play. Performance fabrics like microfiber and microsuede are great as they’re not only soft and comfortable but also resistant to stains and easy to clean. Otherwise, consider getting sofas with removable covers as they can be washed regularly. If you prefer leather (which is great for wiping down pet hairs), ensure it’s scratch- and stain-resistant, as pets can quickly damage softer, untreated leather.

4. Pet-friendly furniture

When choosing furniture, look for pet-friendly pieces that are sturdy, durable, resist scratches and easy to clean. Aside from that, opt for safer alternatives like wooden shutter blinds instead of curtains as they’re less likely to be clawed at or tables and chairs with metal legs as opposed to wooden ones to avoid scratch or bite marks.

5. Create a pet nook

Consider creating a hidden pet bed within your furniture, like a built-in bench or a customised cabinet to keep pet essentials out of plain sight. Or work with a design expert to seamlessly blend their space into the interior of your home such as a customised wall shelving that agile cats can climb into. This way, you’ve got a stylish, uncluttered and unique home prioritising your pet’s comfort.

6. Opt for non-toxic plants

There’s no doubt that plants elevate our spaces but with pets around, be extra cautious about the types of plants you bring indoors as some are toxic to pets. Opt for non-toxic plants like spider plants, money tree plants or areca palms, which not only add greenery to your space but also ensure your pets stay safe.

7. Choose indoor/outdoor rugs

If you’re on the fence about floor coverings, opt for indoor/outdoor rugs as they’re more durable and generally easier to clean. Synthetic fibres, such as polypropylene, are also suitable for homes with pets thanks to their durable stain-resistant features. Plus, they can be easily washed and dried, making them perfect for a home with pets.

8. Organise your pet essentials

Lastly, be sure to consider organisational solutions like cabinets, storage shelves, or boxes to keep pet essentials away neatly. If you’re looking to go the extra mile, why not design a dedicated pet room or zone where they can play freely in and have all their toys and supplies in one place? This way, you’re containing the mess and clutter while keeping your home tidy.

Creating a pet-friendly home doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style or comfort. By thoughtfully incorporating these pet-friendly materials and furnishing, you’re creating a home that’s safe and comfortable where you and your pet can enjoy.
