The year-end festive season is fast approaching, which means it’s the time to host friends and family over food and drinks. It also means: time to prepare your home for guests by making it comfy and welcoming!

The festivities are here but don’t panic! We’re here to help you get through hosting duties this season.

From having Gordon Ramsay-approved cookware to party-ready tinsel and fairy lights, we tell you just how to prepare your home to welcome friends, family, and the new year!

The Kitchen

If you have a small home, guests may congregate in the kitchen instead of the living room. After all, it is the source of all food and drinks. Since the kitchen is where the party starts – from food prep to serving – this space should be your priority.

  • Ensure Ample Lighting

We’ve mentioned countless times how important lighting is in a home, and the kitchen – being the heart of the home – needs to be well lit. Make sure you have ample lighting for a breezy cooking session. If you have bulbs that are dimming, make sure to change them out -a flickering light in the kitchen may not be all that festive.

  • Gordon Ramsay Worthy-Cookware

You don’t have go out and buy yourself entirely new cookware just for the season but when preparing meals, it’s always best to use pans or pots that are sturdy and of good material. The wrong pan can ruin a dish. For instance, a cheap pan with low quality coating can emanate toxins when put on high heat. Every kitchen needs a good non-stick frying pan and at least one cast iron pot that will ease your cooking.

  • Prepare Enough Cutlery

Make sure you have enough serveware and cutlery for everything on your menu and for all your guests, including extras.  A few days before hosting, get everything cleaned and ready for the big day. We don’t want to have guests waiting around for someone else to finish eating before they can have a set of plates and spoons. If you’re not keen on having to do all that cleaning, opt for festive themed party plates and cutlery.

The Living Room

Unless you have a large dining space, this is where all your guests will congregate. The living room often becomes party central so you should take extra time to make it an ideal space for entertaining.

  • Create Manoeuvring Space

When having guests over, it’s important to make sure you have enough space for them to manoeuvre around your room. Forgo all the little decorations and unnecessary furniture that may be in the way instead of helping seat the crowd. Guests may bump into vases or lamps that are in between your couch and chairs so to prevent breakage and spillage, keep walkways clear.

  • Provide Enough Seating

If there’s one thing a living room absolutely needs, it has to be a couch. If you host friends and family regularly, the bigger the couch, the better. Having said that, always keep in my the size of your room before purchasing. Aside from having a comfortable couch, consider adding chairs or stools to the room for the big day. Invest in stow-away seating options that you can bring out to accommodate surprise guests.

  • Bring the Festive Cheer

It is the festive season after all, so go ahead and bust out the tinsel, streamers, and fairy lights! Don’t settle for your mundane living room; spruce it up to welcome the celebrations. A cheery and bright space is sure to liven up the ambience of your home, giving your guests the feel of holiday cheer.

  • Make A List and Check it Twice

Before you get caught up trying to set up the perfect party or gathering, take a few minutes to make a list of all the things that need to be done. The festive season can be overwhelming on its own and adding hosting to the roaster of things that need to be done can be stressful. A list will help you stay organized and make party planning a breeze.

  • Clean Bathroom Etiquette

Honestly, nothing can change the atmosphere of a party like a dirty bathroom. Imagine having a pristine kitchen and cosy living room but a stained sink, a dirty toilet, and an overflowing bin – it’s as off putting as it gets. You know what needs to be done: give the bathroom a deep clean and add fresh hand towels, soap, and tissues.
