Certain homes and interior’s like Carrie’s apartment from Sex and the City are etched in our minds (and Pinterest boards) because of their beautiful designs. We steal glances from Carrie’s apartment and other blockbusters like ‘The Great Gasby’ to learn interior tricks that create these iconic interiors.

We love movies because of the way they whisk us into a fantasy life or even to another time period. It’s everything from the carefully curated wardrobe to the beautifully planned sets.

If you’ve ever envied a fictional character and his/her fictional home you’re not alone. We take a look at iconic film sets of popular movie homes.

Sex and the City 2

Although not an actual house, the set for the movie’s main character, Carrie, and her husband, Big was designed to mimic a New York apartment. As Carrie’s character is a fashion icon, it’s no surprise that the “apartment” reflects her tastefulness. It’s the perfect mix of modern luxury and mid-century design.

What We Love

Besides a good mix of old and new, the “apartment” blends masculine and feminine elements very well. More solid and streamlined pieces like the armchairs, dining table, and coffee table are offset by a textured couch, patterned throw pillows and rug, patterned upholstered dining chairs, and a decorative chandelier.

Mad Men

Although not a movie, this multi-award winning drama series set in the 60s has earned critical acclaim for its historical authenticity and visual style. We just had to give praise to its set decorations that are retro yet totally appealing for the modern-day palate.

What We Love

The 60s have a signature colour scheme of earthy tones, with wood as a popular material choice. Pops of colour on smaller items like lamps and decorative pieces highlight the space and bring the neutral palette to life.

Modern homes can stand to borrow from the boldness of retro interior, with an emphasis on graphic patterns and rich coloured walls.

The Intern

In the movie, the main character, Jules is a successful e-commerce entrepreneur with a family home that reflects her personality: modern and slightly eclectic.

What We Love

The kitchen is the epitome of form plus function with a U-shape layout and plenty of cabinetry to satisfy a real family. We like the use of the open shelving and the arch above the stove which successfully frame the pristine brick backsplashes.

The Great Gatsby

What’s not to love about design from the 20s? The era was characterised by opulence, decadence, and ornate textures and patterns.

What We Love

The Buchanans’ mansion is a good example of a great use of lofty space. The long and large chandeliers bring the ceiling closer to eye level while the large round rugs frame the centre of the room and hold the furniture.

While placing most of the furniture on a rug might swallow up a smaller room and make it seem smaller than it is, this is a good trick for filling up a large room. To balance this effect, the large windows and chandeliers make the room appear bigger

The living room is brought together by a clear colour theme of pinks and reds, making the room appear more spacious and in sync.

It’s Complicated

Fans of the rom-com will be happy to know that the spacious yet cosy Spanish style home in the movie is an actual home and not just a film set!

What We Love

The Spanish style hacienda is evident throughout the home, starting from the alluring entrance featuring a large wooden door and terracotta tiles.

The living room plays up the theme of the house with a wooden ceiling and brings out the earthy colours with orange and blue accents. Meanwhile, the jute carpet, rattan storage boxes and wooden furniture further highlight the theme of natural materials.

We especially love the kitchen and dining area which seems to be a central focus in the movie about familial relationships. The kitchen features an island with seating and easy access to the dining room, allowing interaction between guests and the hosts. It’s a kitchen fit for entertaining!
