In the charming state of Malacca’s heritage town, young IDr James Yong found his passion amid the mix of Straits Peranakan colours and Dutch colonial architecture.

As a kid, he transformed his home into a canvas of endless possibilities, moving furniture around like pieces of a puzzle. His mother, witnessing his boundless creativity, foresaw his future. Fast forward to today, and James’s designs possess a rare quality that transcends the fleeting whims of fashion—timelessness. His projects seamlessly blend innovation with enduring charm, captivating the imaginations of those who encounter them.

In a fast-paced world where design trends come and go, James Yong’s work remains steadfast, a testament to his unwavering vision and commitment to quality. Each project is a labour of love, meticulously crafted to meet the unique needs of clients while staying true to his design philosophy.

James embarked on his journey in the interior design industry more than two decades ago when he founded his firm, Interlink Design Solutions, in 2003. Deliberately choosing to manage the firm single-handedly, he has demonstrated a dedication to his craft that is unmatched in the industry.

James’s design philosophy emphasises practicality and usability. He believes that a house should not only be aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional. In the early stages of his career, he was particularly drawn to the use of natural timber veneer in interior design, and many of his earlier projects featured these distinctive elements. Various veneer companies recognised his talent and approached him to collaborate.

He started incorporating the exotic appeal of natural wood grain veneer with iconic loose furniture into his designs, a transition that reflected his evolving style and aesthetic sensibilities.

The talented designer’s frequent travels to Australia played a pivotal role in shaping his design approach. He was drawn to the clean-cut lines and simplicity of Australian interiors, which influenced him to adopt a minimalist approach in his own work. Lighting became a key element in his designs, as he believed that quality furnishings and well-chosen lighting could transform a space without the need for excessive clutter or decorative pieces.
