The Atap Design Awards Student Icons celebrated emerging talents blending cultural heritage with modern design under the theme “When Traditional Meets Modernity.”
The TOTO by W.Atelier showroom in PJ was recently abuzz with excitement as Atap.co, hosted the Atap Design Awards Student Icons Presentation and Judging session.
This event, a highlight of the prestigious Atap Design Awards, showcased the extraordinary talents of 10 local university students, all vying to impress with their innovative design concepts centred around the theme “When Traditional Meets Modernity.”
The theme was a call to explore how traditional cultural elements could coexist and evolve with modern design principles. Grace Lee, Atap.co’s General Manager of PR and Partnerships, encapsulated this idea in her welcome speech, stating, “This year’s competition theme, ‘When Traditional Meets Modernity,’ invites us to explore the dynamic intersections of culture, heritage, and innovation. We’re excited to see how our finalist students present their visions, honoring the past while embracing the future.”
The showroom, a perfect blend of contemporary elegance and timeless design, provided an inspiring backdrop for the presentations, which commenced after a captivating tour of TOTO’s cutting-edge sanitaryware. The students’ passion and creativity shone through as they shared their visions, each project a testament to the dynamic interplay between Malaysia’s rich heritage and the boundless possibilities of modern design.
A distinguished panel of judges, comprising Mixy Ooi of Vault Design Lab, Nick Fong, co-founder of Nu Infinity, Veanne Chong of Luxe Interior, Raynce Tan of Code Red Studio, and Nicholas Tan from Pocket Square, meticulously evaluated each presentation, their discerning eyes seeking designs that not only pleased aesthetically but also pushed the boundaries of innovation and functionality.
Each student presentation captivated the audience with a unique blend of cultural heritage and modern design sensibilities. Projects ranged from a sanctuary honouring the majestic hornbill to a biophilic oasis seamlessly integrated into an urban landscape. The students demonstrated a profound understanding of their cultural roots and a passionate commitment to creating a more sustainable future.
The event highlighted the next generation of design leaders who are passionate about creating a more sustainable and equitable future. Through the Atap Design Awards and events like this, Atap.co continues to champion the growth and development of Malaysia’s design community. By providing a platform for young talents to showcase their ingenuity, Atap.co hopes to inspire a new generation of designers who use the power of design to bridge the past and the present.
